Platform

WordPress CMS Theming Made Easy

Carrington is a CMS theme platform for WordPress that makes it easy to create unique looks for different categories, post types and comments just by creating custom templates.

By design, the Carrington framework is designed to be extremely flexible and modular. By building onto the already robust wordpress framework, Carrington Theme expands the possibilities of layout on all pages, including your homepage, posts page, category pages and showcases.

In addition, the Carrington framework is available in a variety of options, including a blog format, a text-only format, and a mobile theme. These can be ran simultaneously, allowing your visitors to access your site in the format most appropriate and comfortable to them. Ultimate flexibility is the goal of Carrington Theme.

The Site

Tyler Wolff

This site is my personal portfolio and blog website. It features a blog which has a fluid, auto-aligned format where post excerpts are expanded to full posts via ajax. In addition to the blog, the site features some of my latest web projects and an information section. Overall, it is a simple yet functional site.

Using Carrington

Carrington made the creation of this site from start to finish much simpler and streamlined. What I needed for the site was a way to grab atomic posts via ajax without reloading the home page, while also having single pages for permalinked posts. This type of thing is not provided by Wordpress. Luckily, the Carrington framework made this available to me quite easily with their built in ajax loading function. In addition, the simplified (and highly customizable) theme set up files allowed me to create almost anything I needed for the rest of the site in an organized way. It just made sense.

The Carrington framework is something I will definitely use in the future for Wordpress powered sites.

Child Theme Support

Child theme support has landed in the Carrington core framework. We’d love to get some additional real-world testing on this before we tag the next core version.

You can grab the latest from SVN on Google Code. Then simply replace the carrington-core directory in your theme with new version you have checked out from:

http://carrington.googlecode.com/svn/framework/trunk

and that should do it.

Note that the way child theme support is implemented, your child theme can add new templates to your theme as well as overriding existing templates. I think this is necessary for Carrington – it allows you to create custom templates for your specific site and have them upgrade cleanly via the child theme.

Feedback welcome.

UPDATE:

The steps to test if you want to make a child theme for a Carrington theme (before this support is rolled out in new releases):

  1. Download the framework from SVN using the URL above and replace the carrington-core directory in your parent theme.
  2. Create your child theme (which can include new Carrington templates).

That’s it.

The Site

VW TDI Truth & Dare

TDI’s newest website, built by Crowd Favorite on WordPress MU and BuddyPress, was imagined and designed by the clever folks at Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

While the main part of VW’s TankWars site is powered by WordPress MU, the most interesting aspect of the site is its use of BuddyPress. Each driver’s profile (see the “Leaderboard“) contains their best mileage score and rankings. Users can upload photos, vote on profiles, and leave comments.

Using Carrington

The TankWars section was built before BuddyPress/WordPress shared themes were released and Carrington allowed us to easily reuse code from WordPress and include it throughout BuddyPress. We also quickly built custom excerpt and single page templates which allowed for easy maintenance.

LiveMocks

“Wisdom of the crowd meets mock draft.” LiveMocks is a WordPress and bbPress-powered site that has unique pages and forums for each potential draftee in the NFL and NBA drafts. The wisdom of the crowd, through online voting, may accurately determine who is drafted in each round.
